Controls

Manual Driving and Active Shift

When driving in Arvo!, a gauge will appear in the bottom left corner showing the current speed and current gear range. Each gear has a specific speed range shown in light grey. Acceleration is capped to the max speed for each gear and, in higher gears, the car will not accelerate if the current speed is below the minimum.

For example:

Because the current speed is below the minimum speed for gear 2, the car will not accelerate and the player should change to gear 1.

To change gears quickly but without performing an Active Shift, the player can use the mouse wheel to scroll up or down into different gears.

Alternatively, to change gears and attempt to Active Shift, the player can hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse up or down, then release the left mouse button when the arrow is pointing to the corresponding gear number they want to switch into.

Holding the left mouse button down and hovering over the next highest gear, then waiting for the orange bar to grow and turn green, then releasing the left mouse button in time before it disappears will allow the player to Active Shift, granting a temporary speed boost. This makes it easier to shift quickly into higher gears. This speed boost only activates the first time you enter a gear, resetting when the gear is changed.

The game is currently in a very early stage but we are working to make it a full game. Here we will be archiving different versions of the game as we progress, so if you're checking out our game for the first time, play the latest version (with the highest version number) for the best experience. If you play our prototype, let us know what you think!
